Alright, so since it’s been almost a year since I had posted on this blog I figured I would start it out again with a bang. No literally.
Yesterday, January 31st, the Argus Leader posted an easy, legislative story about a proposed gun law. If you’re following the same people I’m following on Twitter or another motley band of South Dakota Twitter folk, then your timeline probably exploded just like mine did.
And YOU get a gun! And YOU get a gun!!
Sorry, my Oprah impression isn’t what it used to be…
The first people I saw were complaining about what an outrage this is and how they are never going to own a gun! Sadly, all of those people were missing the punch line. This bill has absolutely nothing to do with gun laws. Those people still don’t get it…
Then there were the people crying about how much money and time SD’s Congress is wasting with discussion of HB 1237. Those people may actually have a valid point. It is costing money to propose a bill that even Representative Wick said, “Do I or the other cosponsors believe that the State of South Dakota can require citizens to buy firearms? Of course not.”
Then I pose the question: What then, are our Congressional representatives supposed to be doing if they are not to be debating bills, sharing opinions and making points?
All views aside, I’m not saying I agree or disagree with the Health Care Legislation or this proposed gun law but I do think that Rep. Wick deserves some credit for standing up and making his opinion known in a very different and attention grabbing way. It obviously got our attention.
